One World One Dream, 2008

Pair of nylon flags
4 x 6 feet each (flags)
52 x 12 x 6 inches (box)

'One World One Dream' consists of a pair of large applique nylon pennants originally designed for the Chinese Biennial, which coincided with the Beijing Olympics. The design appropriates the logos of the two lead Democratic candidates, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton (already out-of-the-running at the time the work was made), and renders them in the colors of the People's Republic of China's flag. The pennants knot together two global spectacles of 2008: the US presidential election and the Beijing Summer Olympics.

The pennants are stored around dowels made of birch, a typical wood used for traditional Chinese furniture, which are in turn encased in a box of American cherry. The two woods, while initially similar in tone, over years will diverge as the cherry darkens.
