Well, Wish, Wall, 2006/07
Vinyl, coin dropper, Canadian quarters
12 x 15 feet (wall drawing)
locations: The Soap Factory, Minneapolis; Fieldgate Gallery, London
Conceived for three consecutive exhibitions in Minneapolis, London, and New York, 'Well, Wish, Wall' consists of a wall drawing of a well, cloud, and bush, culled from Super Mario Brothers. Occasionally, a device hidden in the ceiling drops a Canadian quarter through a hole. Meant to connect disparate physical locations (one imagines an Ottawan teen's arcade coin wending its way to London), it also conflates different temporal registers: the quarters, which fall in front of rather than into the two-dimensional well, evoke wishes that remain unfulfilled. The project is a collaboration with Daniel Bouthot.
